This Memorial Day Salute a Veteran with a New Job!
This Memorial Day Salute a Veteran with a New Job!
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the jobless rate for veterans of the post 9/11 generation has improved, but still remains stubbornly high.
Veterans aged 18 to 24 have had a really difficult time finding work, with one in five unemployed in 2012 (up from one in four in 2011). These numbers are even more daunting for women. The unemployment rate for female veterans inched higher, from 12.4% to 12.5% last year, and from about 35,000 out of work to 37,000.
Joblessness among new veterans will continue to be a pressing issue in the coming years when more than one million service members will hang up their uniforms and transition back to civilian life. According to USA Today’s Greg Zoroya, “As the Afghanistan War winds down, more than 300,000 veterans will leave the military each of the next four years.”
Hiring veterans is not just about recognizing these peoples’ important service to their country; it makes good business sense too, and here are a couple reasons why:
1. Veterans have real-world skills that make for great employees.
Veterans have a proven track record of leadership, teamwork, integrity and performance under pressure. Smart business owners understand the value of real life experience and are quickly learning how well veterans’ combat skills can transition to their business success.
2. Hiring a veteran makes good bottom-line sense.
In addition to acquiring great talent, did you know that the Returning Heroes Tax Credit provides an incentive of up to $5,600 for businesses to hire long-term unemployed veterans? Likewise, the Wounded Warrior Tax Credit provides up to $9,600 for hiring long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities.
